Depending on where you live, working on your fitness throughout the summer can be a real challenge. Exercising in 90+ degree weather can be less than appealing for most, but with these tips, you can safely get outside for some exercise, and maybe even enjoy it!
- Get Up Early or Stay Up Late – The worst time to be out in the sun is between 10am-4pm. Your best bet for a safe and enjoyable workout in the summertime is in the morning before the sun is up or just after sunset. If you don’t have the option of working out early or late, opt for a swim. You can get an amazing workout in the pool, without even working up a sweat.
- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate – This is probably the most important tip. Drink your water before, during, and after a workout. It will help your sweat system perform at it’s best.
- Wear Sweat-Wicking Fabric – This type of fabric is designed to wick the sweat away from the body and transfer it to the outer portion of the garment for evaporation. Cotton shirts will trap moisture and heat onto the body, so stay away from those during your workouts- remember “cotton is rotten”. It’s also best to avoid dark colors. Lighter colors will absorb less sunlight and heat.
- Take Baby Steps – Your body needs to acclimate to the heat. There’s more demand on the heart, so your level of exertion will be stronger. Listen to your body, and slow down or stop when needed to prevent heat illness.
